Code Enforcement Public Hearings Code enforcement case flow infographic

Code Enforcement is part of the City’s process to uphold community standards set by local codes and ordinances. Residents play a vital role in maintaining the appearance, safety, and value of our neighborhoods. Our shared goal is to keep our community safe, resilient , and beautiful. Whenever possible, we work collaboratively with property owners to achieve voluntary compliance and avoid lengthy enforcement proceedings.

When a complaint is received, an Officer inspects the property. Owners are given the opportunity to correct any issues and are offered resources for assistance if needed. If violations are not resolved, the case may be brought before a “quasi-judicial” magistrate or board. The citizen volunteers who serve as magistrates and board members are appointed by the City Commission and ensure a fair and transparent public hearing process for code enforcement.

Code Magistrates

Code Magistrates preside over hearings in code enforcement cases. The Code Magistrate hears the evidence in each case, issues orders directing an owner to bring a property into compliance, and may impose fines for non-compliance.

Code Magistrate hearings are as scheduled and held at 1:00 pm at the Frenchtown Renaissance Center, located at 435 N Macomb Street.

Beginning November 4, 2025, postings can be found here.
